Question of the week: What kinds of social media apps do you think you might use in your library? If you use some already, what ideas did you get for making better use of them?
We currently use Facebook to post library pictures and activities. We put on events, pictures, quotes and contests. This class reinforced the idea of not linking the library page to a personal page and this is very important! We have a social media policy and this allows us to have a set of guidelines when working with social media. I am also thinking about using Instagram sometime in the future. We do not have a page on Pinterest, but we use the site quite a bit for craft ideas and quotes for our digital frame. It was nice to learn about the other social media options available.

I found a few examples of libraries using instagram. For example, Lloyd Sealy Library, John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York shows many diffrent pictures, such as piles of books students are about to tackle; Starbucks lattes next to laptops with Word documents open; grinning students goofing off in the group study rooms; and so on. It’s one glimpse into what the library means to them.

The other one was North Carolina State University's James B. Hunt Jr. Library My #HuntLibrary was created as a platform to foster student and community engagement with the new building via social media imagery and to preserve and archive these images as part of the record of the Hunt Library.
They used instagram to show the development of the new library.

USF Library Tutorial- How to Read Citations and References
This is the video I selected from YouTube. It shows you how to read citations and references. Videos like this are very helpful to students and others. I agree that it's not put on here for entertainment, only information.

Pinterest sites
http://www.pinterest.com/2506trish/public-library-displays/ This gives a lot of ideas for displays in libraries!
http://www.pinterest.com/hkayh/library-activities/ This site gives many, many ideas for reading programs, book clubs, etc.
There are so many sites out there devoted to libraries and reading that there are infinite possibilities.

Facebook uses for libraries
Libraries can use Facebook for many purposes. Some common uses include promotion of new arrivals to the library, promotion of coming library and area events. Facebook can also be used as a way to address issues in the library through suggestions for purchase or new programming. Facebook can also provide entertainment for patrons. For example, we often post library or book-related cartoons and little bits of information, that are there solely to get our patrons engaged and "like" our page, hopefully leading to more participation in library events and services.
